Nutshell and Reports

Another week, another day, another hour. Funny where it goes and how fast it does. The whole holiday just went past like it wasn’t even there. Again, felt a little disappointed I didn’t do all I planned to do for the holidays. But, what’s past is past and all I can do now is face what’s to come for the next couple of months before any substantial holiday comes along again. And even so, the next one would definitely be a whole lot less better than the last one, considering its proximity to the dreaded acronym… SPM.

In summary, my holidays were quite alright. Has its ups and downs. The highlights of the fortnight were;

A movie outing with friends over at Centre Point. Terminator: Salvation was what we watched and I’ll give it a 4/5. Lotsa booms and bangs. I like.

A cycling trip around town, along with Derek, Mitran, and Samuel. Not as good as the last ones, but was still an enjoyable trip around town nonetheless.

A relatively short cybercafé outing over at City Mall with 8 or so others. Had some fun times, and also some pwned moments during the first 30 minutes or so. >.>

Last, but certainly not least would be the RYLA camp I attended during the last 4 days of the holiday all the way in Sepilok, Sandakan. I was only informed of it rather last minute. So I was rather hesitant of it at first, not knowing what I was going to be shoved head first into. My fears were slightly eased upon knowing the activity line up and what sort of people I might meet there. There was also another additional bonus I was hoping for that came rather late into my knowledge. The fact that there were other openings free for me to chose to fill them with.

Call after call, I only got negative statements overall, so that glimmer of hope quickly faded by 8 PM. I’m going to have to face the camp with only complete strangers as my companions. The following would be a pictured report of the 4 days I was there, pictures included. I can assure you it will be a little on the long side, but I cannot promise you it will be interesting. This report is more of a journal of sorts that I can look back to if I ever want to feel nostalgic some time later.

DAY 1

0700 hours – Arrived at bus station, bags packed, mind readied and had breakfast. Met my busmates, one of them was rather friendly and the other 2 were more quiet. Found out our bus was overbooked so we had to get a later bus. When the time came, we took a quick group photo before we left.

0800 hours - All aboard, and away we go! Overall, the bus ride was pretty uneventful... so far. Only some light friendly banter and Temple by Matthew Reilley to keep me busy for the remainder of the trip.

Sadly, the bus driver just had to play shitty malay music. And apparantly he either left porn on his music folder or malay artists have fantastic names for thier songs. The one on the bottom is named 'Kristal - Anal'

1000 hours - Arrived at Telipok. Bought some snacks and refreshments over at some stalls and also went for a quick toilet break.

1030 hours - KABLAM! TAP! TAP! TAP! TAP! Tap! tap! tap! tap! taaap! taaaaaap! taaaaaaap! taaaaaaaaaap...

I thought we blew an axle or crashed or something when I heard a sickening crashing sound from underneath not far from where I sat. Startled the crap outta me as I was rather engrossed in my novel at that time. Found out we blew out a tyre... Damm, I thought, we're going to be late!

Blew out rather violently I might add. Took about half an hour of struggling to get it out and replaced. Right in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a rolling expanse of palm trees as the dominant scenery. Speaking of which, that was pretty much all I saw for most the latter half of the trip. Rather depressing to be honest. What used to be a vibrant and pristine forest is now a monotonous palm oil plantation... Miles upon miles of nothing but neatly placed rows of palm.

1400 hours - Arrived! At Sepilok Jungle Resort. And for once, it actually looks as good as it is in the brochure as it is in real life. Registered ourselves to the campmaster and took a quick glance around. Noticed we're rather odd as nearly everyone else wore some form of Interact club Tee. But, that feeling quickly faded away as they're a rather friendly bunch of people. Shook hands and exchanged names as soon as I took a seat in the main hall.

1445 hours - An opening speech by the chairperson and those of rank. Same dull affair as with any opening speech.

1510 hours - And then theres the typical traditional dance, nothing too special again.

1530 - First activity, regarding fitness. A few people were called out to lift one of the heavier Rotarians there with nothing but two fingers each. Fun stuff. The speaker was one hunk of a man too, a bodybuilder to be exact. You can practically feel the collective swoon of the girls there when he first went on stage. Jerrican Tan was his name.

1630 hours - Then came some fitness tests, one of my bus mates did some aerobics to test his cardiovascular fitness. I did some running tests to test out my agility. Got 4th, not too shabby...

1900 hours - After a couple of hours of break and some 'getting to know' around the place and the campers, went on to the cafeteria to get some dinner. Line was rather long, food was only somewhat decent though. After finishing up my dinner went to another speech in the same hall, this time regarding communication skills. Was fun, the speaker never failed to throw in a joke every few minutes which had most of us in stitches. Thats the kinda of speaker I like, one who entertains as well as enlightens. Mohammad Iskandar Shah AKA Sonny, salutations!
